That's what I did.  I do change the .aff file to add sound folding and
a few other things that Vim can do.  The .dic file is now unmodified,
the duplicate words that appeared in the previous version are gone.

This indeed takes a bit of time to learn.  For trying out it helps to
make a small .dic file and use ":spelldump" to see the resulting words.
