Visual Block: $ vs. ^ inconsistency?

Hello,

  In visual block mode (<C-V>) one can get jagged 
  right edges by hitting $.  But hitting ^ does not
  result in jagged left edges.  Why the inconsistency?
  Is it something in my set-up?
