That's not a beta, that's a german double s (forget what it's called).





Eszet. It can be entered by hitting <Ctrl-K> s s or, if 'digraph' is set (it usually isn't), s <Backspace> s (disregard the spaces and <...> is one key).

Maybe you have a mapping ending in a stray Ctrl-K (just guessing)?
