I don't think I posted my commented note about 99 but it says if you
use 99 it's supposed to cause the default (font) or foreground color
to happen I'm not real sure of the notes vintage, but it appears to
be from 2003
# [HP 07/08/03 21:18 Using 99 means it uses default font color]

The whole syntax arrangement goes back even farther when I swiped it
lock stock and barrell from a fellow named Donavon:
[HP From Donavans .vimrc: May 20 2000]
But now I see how it works I can insert what I like. I think that 99
may have been an attempt to be more portable.

Thanks again. This appears to be a nice smooth and easy look on a black xterm:
   hi StatusLine cterm=NONE ctermbg=8 ctermfg=7

Dark grey background lightgrey foreground.

This sucks... I just noticed if I run `: so ~/.vimrc' that nifty
smooth thing turns black and invisible...

Am I wrong in thinking calling `:so ~/.vimrc' should not change anything?

Maybe it's time you put all your ":hi" commands into a separate colour scheme (a script in ~/.vim/colors). I am attaching, as a simple easy-to-understand example, the "almost-default" colorscheme I use in the GUI.

Once you have written your own colorscheme, let's say ~/.vim/colors/reader.vim, invoke it by ":colorscheme reader".

Best regards,
Tony.
