You could also put this kind of stuff in ~/.vim/filetype.vim. For example, 
this is how my filetype.vim looks:

  au BufNewFile,BufRead *.antlr setf antlr

  au BufNewFile,BufRead *.cmm   setf asm
  au BufNewFile,BufRead *.d     setf make
