Entering citations (footnotes) in vim

Is there any simple way to add numbered footnotes 
(citations) in vim? I have the vimfootnotes plugin, which 
works, but if I need to add or delete a footnote later I 
then have to continue to do everything by hand, which 
rather defetes the object.

Any suggestions?
