So, for any vim-er who has strange behavior with certain macros, I have discovered that the kinky behaviour of xterm to convert ]v (and ]t and other sequences) to an eight-bit code can be turned off by setting the following X resources in the .Xdefaults:
XTerm*eightBitInput:false I wish I could find a justification for that design decision ...
