Vim docs are in fact two manuals:

Vim User Manual and Vim Reference Guide

Second one is where you usually land after use of :help command but
first - User Manual is really great and usually under appreciated source 
of knowledge about Vim.

Print out User Manual and read it *from the beginning*. Not only usr_41.
Only in this case you will get good grasp of nuances of various Vim
modes.
