I don't know, but I use the Thunderbird extension "Remove Duplicate Messages"
to get rid of them. It works quite well on Tb2 (albeit with a version
compatibility override). It ought to work with your IceDove too (and no need
for an override in 1.5), if Debian did not corrupt it too much.
