Aha! The default MatchParen highlight is term=reverse. If your cursor doesn't 
blink, there's no visual difference between the cursor and the matched-paren. 
Since your cursor is a steady unblinking block, and matchparen highlighting is 
applied both to the bracket at or near the cursor and to its mate, applying 
reverse-video to the block cursor might (I'm not sure) make it it invisible at 
the same time that its mate is made prominent.

Let the cursor blink normally, and you will see that it is where it should be 
(the cursor will blink, and, when it is on a bracket, its mate will be shown 
in _unblinking_ reverse-video). Or, use

        :set cuc cul

and you'll get crosshairs pinpointing the cursor position, again showing you 
that it is indeed where it should be.
