I agree with your sentiments about cygwin, I've never been able to like it much and only use it when I have to. However I find you can with a bit of effort get 'cmd' into pretty good shape anyway with native ports of unix tools. I use the uniq win32 port provided on http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/ and it works fine in my experience with it. Then also use Console2 so that you have a decent GUI and your set.
