:help option-backslash I'm afraid I can't help with the substance of your question, but I see that the docs for titlestring don't say that =%! should work like it does in statusline. For titlestring (apparently - I haven't used it), only the printf-like % options apply. The titlestring docs do have a couple of examples of using an expression.
