I've already been speaking to him quite a lot, in fact, about this very issue. :) It was my idea to suggest to him to use CSI u for modified Unicode keypresses (e.g. Ctrl-A could be CSI 65;5u) rather than the rather bizarre choice of hacking it around "missing" function key 27; to be CSI 27;5;65~.
