FW: How many windows? tabs?

How can I find out (programmatically, of course)

- how many windows do I have open in a split window
- how many tabs do I have open in each of the split
   windows?

I've read 'windows.txt' back and forth but I can't
seem to find any way of doing it. Ideas?
