"text or GUI", you say. What is your 'guitablabel' set to? What is your 
'tabline' set to? You can always add that if you want, by including %m 
or %M in the setting -- but I suppose that means you will have to 
explicitly code everything that you want to show.

I don't use the GUI tabs (I use text-style tabs even in the GUI), and my 
custom 'tabline' does not display 'modified' status because I chose not 
to show it there (it is shown on the 'statusline').
