Works for me:
:sign define 12 text=12
:exe "sign place 12 line=" . line('.') "name=12"
\ "file=" . expand('%:p')
:sign place
:sign unplace 12
:sign list
:sign undefine 12
What text did you use? According to the help, it must occupy one or two
character cells, so if you use numbers they can range between -9 and 99
