hg update vim73
which you should do after the clone and before editing any
files. That will select the branch or revision that will be
the parent of your working copy. I usually think of 'update'
as changing my view into the repo, or as changing the
revision that I'm working on, but that's not quite right and
I'm trying to change my mental model and my vocabulary to
match what Mercurial actually does.

right after the clone, and i now have my mods to feature.h
combined with vim7.3 and my arguments to configure

I just added a comment to my wiki article to cover this use case. It is
mentioned, of course, in the hg manpage and in "hg help update" (which
can be found via "hg help") but I often find the Mercurial help and
manpages rather confusing. "A textbook is never complete in the first
edition: the pupils have to teach the teacher" ;-)
