It's hardly surprising that Vim freezes up, considering you're essentially causing Vim to try to treat the current TTY's input stream like a normal file for completion type purposes, while at the same time Vim also is trying to use the TTY for user input.

In other words, this is not a Vim bug, just a Unix user shooting himself in the foot, which Unix doesn't really try to prevent.
