Testing with a self-built 7.3b and Debian's latest Vim 7.2 packages, tear-off menus work fine for me. I ran “gvim -u NONE -N”, detached both the help menu and the file menu and was able to open files, open the help, etc. > I have the same problem in Vim 7.2 and 7.3b, it might have something to > do with the GTK version.
