I don't think the number of people complaining is a legitimate measure
in this case. Few people understand what 'background' is for or notice
when it changes or understand why. The proportion of
terminal-supporting color schemes that exhibit the problem would
probably be a reasonable measure, and if it will affect your decision
I'd be willing to do some research on that.

However, it makes no sense to accept code that is sometimes wrong when
it has no benefit, so I re-raise the question from my initial report:
Is there some benefit?
