This wasn't solely directed at the discussed CursorHoldR; in any case, by
enclosing the autocmd in an augroup, you can easily disable selected autocmds.

I think it's good that you've broadened the discussion; on the other hand,
Christian has already implemented a quick solution, and it may be better to have
that than to wait until eternity for a more general, but more difficult 
solution.
