Well, obviously I do. Now I can see it. Years ago, as a Vim newbie, I somehow came to believe that :nohlsearch was a convenience shortcut for :set nohlsearch. Because I usually define my mappings using :set inv* instead of :set no*, I considered :set invhlsearch superior to that "convenience shortcut". This, naturally, introduced the side effects I mentioned in my first e-mail of this thread. I googled this topic before I posted to vim_dev, but nothing I read made me question my original misconception. I consider this a documentation issue and I sent a patch to Issues on googlecode.
