The TERM environment variable on the FreeBSD box is the first thing. It must match the capabilities of what's on the mac, iTerm2 or Terminal.app. Logged on to box type: echo $TERM >From the iTerm2 FAQ: "The terminal type set in the terminal profile should match the TERM variable in your session environment."
