Did you measure this before patch 988?
Patch 989 may also help a little bit.
Problem with the new engine is that the overhead for simple things is
big. It really only has an advantage with using .* or .\+ kind of
things. I'll do some more optimization, but eventually we probably only
want to use the NFA engine if there are these repeating constructs.
