What surprised me was how much my "finger memory" depends on
context. When I'm editing text, I don't even think about which of
hjkl I'm typing to move some direction--I see a direction in which I
want to move the cursor and the cursor seems to move by itself.
When I was playing the game, I had trouble navigating and often got
error messages like, "I don't have the i key". I didn't understand
why I was having such difficulty until I recognized that my fingers
were using the
i
jkl
keys as they would the arrow keys:
+---+
| ^ |
| | |
+---+---+---+
|<- | | | ->|
| | v | |
+---+---+---+
Even after recognizing that, I had to concentrate hard on using hjkl
to move in the context of that game.
Regards,
Gary
