It actually uses setline(). I think we might need a new (intentional) feature that allows moving the cursor in insert mode without breaking undo, or, something like undojoin that allows chaining the next insert with this one. Basically I want something that allows mappings like here: http://vim.wikia.com/wiki/Automatically_append_closing_characters to not break the undo sequence.
