Ok, I misunderstood the problem. I thought the problem was "when the completion 
menu pops up the first item is not selected". I see now that the problem is 
actually "when I've selected an item in the completion menu but then continue 
typing, the selection goes away".

I can also reproduce in the 7.4 beta version I still have around on this 
computer, though I'm not sure what it did before. Thanks for clarifying.
