It looks like it indeed solved my problem on linux. I have to investigate more on why it didn't solve it on my mac. Probably I did something wrong (even though "hg diff" showed the correct diff after I applied the patch) or maybe there's some difference in the configure options and the patch only solves part of the whole problem.
