I only mention this for completeness of the discussion, and I realize this is only peripherally related to the point. When the OOM killer is striking, setting a ulimit can cause a quicker, and nicer failure, facilitating debugging sometimes. Generally, I've always had misgivings about the "abort is the best error handler school", as I call it. Seems to show a lack of imagination of what it might be like to be in other shoes.
