Thanks all. Bram's patch 7.4.975 fixes the problem here. In case this ever arises again, I suspect the "au LargeFile BufLeave" line in my commands to demonstrate the problem was required. Executing the BufLeave event when leaving the big file window seemed to be necessary to produce the conditions that led to the problem.
