Please read what exactly was requested and try doing the following:

1. highlight something on *screen* line 5, not *buffer* line 5
2. highlight something on line 5 while buffer has only 1 line
3. highlight something on *screen* column 5
4. highlight something on screen column 5 while buffer is empty.
