I finally found the magic chant to have Travis CI also run the GUI test.
This is by enabling a virtual framebuffer.

The test coverage nicely increased by almost 2 percent.  However, lots
of the GUI code is still not covered.  It should be fairly easy to add a
few GUI-specific tests and increase test coverage.  Someone interested?

You can see the current "missed lines" on Coveralls:

Look for a high "Missed" lines count rather than percentages.

When looking at the files the "partially covered" lines mess up the
display.  I'm using the Stylebot extension to hide them with:

            display: none;
        }
