I started my inquiry as a mere minor nuisance to my custom vim build script. Little did I realize that it was of far greater significance. Thanks for the report to the grep dev folk. There are some (many) utils where I always assume any upgrade is progress & safe. I sent an email to Patrick Volkerding of Slackware as well. Everyone needs to know about this before it ensnares the rest of the linux distro community.
Guido PS Had to go fix my entire /var/log/packages dir of spurious entries. Sheesh! PPS I wasted a lot of time going thru the vim configure bash script looking for a bug! (Intricate!!!!)
