I'm also using Vim 8.0 with tmux 2.3 on OS X 10.11.6. I tried to reproduce the said bug but hadn't seen the behavior described above. So, I think it would also be better to think of the possibility of temporal failure of the trackpad, which can be caused by anything that changes the characteristics of the capacitor consisting of one's fingers and the trackpad. e.g., high humidity, invisible stain on the contact surfaces, or static electricity charged on one's fingers...
