Vimball was there long before plugin managers became popular and I still like its simplicity over those newly popular alternatives, just because I am able to download and source a simple file and be able to have a complete plugin installed with no additional effort Yes, sometimes you don't have git installed and don't want to go through the trouble of installing git and some autoload plugin just to be able to install a single plugin. This happened to me in the past especially often on Windows where the browser was locked in by some obscure proxy setting, so git clone did not work. This is one of the reasons, I still distribute my plugins as vimballs. Another one is vimball makes it easy to see, what will actually be installed.
