I use ":set wildmenu wildmode=longest:full,full" (provided of course that those settings are supported in the current Vim) and that suits me (then I navigate the "wild menu" by means of arrow keys); but as I said earlier, I also believe that no single default is going to satisfy everyone and that happily we have the vimrc so each user can tweak Vim to his (or her) own preferences.
