Instead of extending screenchar(), which returns only a number for the
base character, add screenstr(), which returns a string with the base
character and any composing character.  With the str2list() function it
can then be converted to a list of numbers, if needed.  But in many
cases I would expect the string to be used.  E.g. in tests one can
compare the return value screenstr() with the expected string.
