The log is definitely started.

Actually, when using GVim I'm not getting any ch_log messages that
originate from vim itself, e.g.

    SafeState: back to waiting, triggering SafeStateAgain

whereas when using Vim I do.

So that's probably why I'm not seeing the ch_log lines I just added?
