Due to an oversight on my part, this setting for "viminfofile" in .vimrc
did actually work.
(the actual problem was a delay in the propagation of file updates across
NFS on my local network which led me to believe the setting was not
effective).


It appears that my desired configuration is supported and all of vim's
files are now where I want them to be.
