In Terminal there is a check box to do just this. When selected, the option key becomes the meta key. For example option-b; when selected, this just allows one to move one word backward on the command line. When not selected, pushing option-b just puts a little integral symbol. I recognize there are many people who need to use not ASCII characters. I almost never do and would like the option of turning it off. I am also curious to know anybody else's opinion.
