Just as another point of reference - it works fine for me with macvim vim executable and iterm with TERM=xterm-color (Iterm also supports 256 colors and xterm mouse support so you can use mouse in console vim (set mouse+=a) and use nice colorschemes. The only problem I had is that the background doesn't get reset straight away when you leave, but after a command like ls, then ctrl-l everything is back to normal.
