Good theory, but I don't think that's it: I have my gmail configured for plain, rather than rich, text. In fact, I have the same problem in pretty much any Safari textarea, with only a few exceptions (like the area in which I typed the original post -- it doesn't work with the reply box though!). Weird, eh?
