I noticed too, on some occasions, that displaying very heavy debug output (while debugging heavily loaded webservers), iTerm had some difficulty coping with the amount of data to cache. I believe this has improved recently, since I stopped seeing the beachball. So maybe it's time to give it a second try, especially since in terms of features it beats Terminal easily.
