Hm. Wonder how that got changed. Anyway, I've made the correction, sourced .vimrc, and don't get any error messages. However, I don't know how to run the script. Neither wc nor WC works. The comment on the third response at the page Arthur linked to http://stackoverflow.com/questions/114431/fast-word-count-function-in-vim/120386#120386 suggests with the status line assignment runs on its own and updates the status line whenever you stop typing.
