:r stands for :read just to clear it up. as in 
:read !figlet hello 
which get's you:
 _          _ _       
| |__   ___| | | ___  
| '_ \ / _ \ | |/ _ \ 
| | | |  __/ | | (_) |
|_| |_|\___|_|_|\___/
