Dave, I'm attaching a version with a patch that delays processing the commands in .vimrc until Vim loads up completely. This should solve the possibility of a problem in (i).
I might have missed answering your other question earlier: The plugin will build the database, and then incrementally update it as the files that belong to a database are changed. If you don't see a database being built, then something is wrong.
