:set backspace=indent,eol,start

or your preferred combination. This is often done by a systemwide
vimrc, which is probably the case on Ubuntu. You can check what exactly
Ubuntu does by checking its system vimrc and gvimrc:

:e $VIM/vimrc
:e $VIM/gvimrc

or if that doesn't work, do :version and check what the system vimrc and
gvimrc actually are.

:help 'backspace'
