Can't explain you results (in my xterm all your imap's works like a
charm). But just one wilde idea... What if you define your mappings
like this:

imap 'a <C-R>=nr2char(225)<CR>
imap 'e <C-R>=nr2char(233)<CR>
imap 'i <C-R>=nr2char(237)<CR>
imap 'u <C-R>=nr2char(250)<CR>

?
