Thanks to both of you for the tips. I eventually came up with this:
filetype on autocmd WinEnter,FileType vim,tex,* colorscheme wombat autocmd WinEnter,FileType perl,sh colorscheme desert It works OK apart from in split windows where the existing buffer will change it's colorscheme to that of the newly opened buffer.
