Have you tried ":set cul" or maybe even ":set cuc cul"? I use it and it
doesn't seem overly slow to me. I also have the following in my colorscheme:
if has("gui_running")
hi clear CursorLine
hi CursorLine guibg=#F4F4F4
endif
hi clear CursorColumn
hi link CursorColumn CursorLine
Best regards,
Tony.
