Have you tried ":set cul" or maybe even ":set cuc cul"? I use it and it 
doesn't seem overly slow to me. I also have the following in my colorscheme:

if has("gui_running")
   hi clear CursorLine
   hi CursorLine                 guibg=#F4F4F4
endif
hi clear CursorColumn
hi link  CursorColumn   CursorLine
